Everyone pretty much understands that a measure of success for any artist is to make it onto the hit charts in either the UK or USA. Those are the two areas where you will achieve worldwide recognition, which brings with it both celebrity status and wealth.

Canada has its own music charts, known as Billboard Canada. It includes the music that has topped the charts in Canada, but is not exclusively Canadian artists. Which is why for the last few weeks of 2014, Taylor Swift was topping the music charts in Canada.

The JUNO Awards are given to the Canadian artists and bands who are the most successful each year. Last year, the big names in the Canadian music scene were Arcade Fire, Justin Bieber, Serena Ryder, and "Tegan and Sara". While Arcade Fire and Justin Bieber have had success in USA and worldwide, I'm not sure you could say the same for the other two...Not that they don't deserve it!

The fact is, with only 35 million Canadians to buy your music, the money is simply not here in Canada to make our artists multimillionaires. They have to be successful in other parts of the world too, if they want to make the big bucks. It's why you would know the names Celine Dion, Bryan Adams, and Avril Lavigne, but probably never heard of people like Jann Arden, Aselin Debison, Paul Piche, or Roch Voisine.
