Graph |x+1|-|x-1|?

Why is there a negative part in the graph if I must take absolute values? Shouldn't it be an all positive graph?

    For example, lets say, x = -2

    |-2 +1| - |-2 - 1|

    |-1| - |-3|

    1 - 3

    = - 2

    If x=-6, |x+1|=|-5|=5 and |x-1|=|-7|=7 so

    y=|x+1|-|x-1|=5-7=-2

    You do not take the abs value of y

    But you are taking the DIFFERENCE between a couple of numbers.

    If you were just taking the SUM of some absolute values, then it couldn't be negative.

    You are not taking the absolute value of the entire expression, just of the minuend and subtrahend. THEN you are subtracting.
