Prepositions in English are highly idiomatic. If you mean ESL students, the prepositions should be taught in combination with the verb or adjective they are attached to (you can have them interview each other, for example- "What are you interested in?" "What are you worried about?") or in the phrases they occur in ("On September 1st", "In December", "for the weekend"). Deal with them in groups. Except for prepositions of location, there are no overarching rules.
