Do you know if a mattress on an area rug instead of laminate will prevent mold from forming?

Unfortunately I never knew that if you put your mattress directly on the floor, such as a laminate floor... that the cold of the floor and the warmth from the mattress cause condensation to form and then you get mold. That's what I learned today after noticing mold under my mattress.

So my question is... while I do have an option to have a relative make me a low profile bed frame in the next month or two I still would rather have the mattress on the floor. Instead of having it on the laminate flooring directly... does anyone know if I put it on an area rug instead, if that will warm the floor enough so condensation doesn't keep forming? Thanks for any answers you may have.

It might slow it down a bit, but you'll end up with a damp rug as well as a damp mattress, a moldy rug if you let it sit damp very long. The problem is that as you sleep you produce moisture, and if the moisture cannot has no way to escape from the mattress then it stays in it. It gets out at the top, but it can't get out of the part of the mattress that's against the floor. You need air circulation on the underside of the mattress. Not to mention that being exposed to constant moisture will damage a laminate floor beyond repair. If you really really have to have your mattress on a laminate floor, I'd put a sheet of plastic under it, and a large towel, and change the towel every couple of days.
