RAID is a technology that allows you to connector two or more hard drives together so that each of the drives copy/mirror information from the other drive(s). That way if one of the hard drives goes bad the computer can continue to run using the "copy" of the information on the other drive(s). It reduces the odds that you will lose information and makes it easier to replace a bad hard drive. You simply remove the failing drive and install a new one, and the RAID will re-add it in place of the old drive putting all the old information back on to it.

Full form of "RAID" is redundant array of inexpensive disks. But now it is called commonly redundant array of independent disks and it is a data storage virtualization technology. RAID was created to combine multiple, less-expensive drives into a single, higher-capacity and/or faster volume.

four levels of RAIDs are there

    RAID 0

    RAID 1

    RAID 5

RAID 10 (also known as RAID 1+0)

The basic designing element of RAID is to assemble multiple inexpensive hard drives to create a hard drive set in order to exceed a single, expensive hard drive. According to different version of RAID, RAID has more advantages than single hard drive, such as enforce data integration, and reinforce fault tolerance function, and increase transfer speed or storage.

Moreover, RAID hard drive array can be seen as a single hard drive or logistic storage unit, which can be catalogued in RAID-0, RAID-1, RAID-5, and RAID-10. RAID can be classified in various levels, which has their advantages and pitfalls respectively, user can select different level according their various requirements.

RAID (originally redundant array of inexpensive disks; now commonly redundant array of independent disks) is a data storage virtualization technology that combines multiple disk drive components into a logical unit for the purposes of data redundancy or performance improvement.

    "What is a RAID?"

It is a method of Arraying Inexpensive Disks, to yield a lower failure rate (with or without a performance hit) than a single disk alone. Sort of like skydiving with a full size reserve chute.
