Your tuner will tune to notes, but not to octaves. There are 7 notes in an octave. So if you tune your lowest string, E, to the E on the tuner (I am assuming it is a digital tuner) then what your tuner shows could be one of several different octaves. Tighten - or loosen - the E string until it is not touching the frets and is reasonably tight, not loose (this is assuming that the strings have been strung correctly and are not loosening as you tighten them). Now use your tuner to get the E tuned. Once the E is in tune, do the same to the other strings. If in doubt if it is the right octave or not tune the guitar to itself. That is... the fifth fret of the Lowest string (the fattest string with the lowest sound, this string will be the string closest to your face when you are holding the guitar.. the highest string is the highest string in sound, which is also the thinnest string and the one furthest from your face). Fret the E at the fifth fret, that should be equal to the A, the next string. The third string down, D, should be equal to the A string at the fifth fret. G, the fourth string down, should be equal to the D at the fifth fret. The B string equal to the G at the FOURTH fret, and the last, high E equal to the B string at the fifth fret. Then you can fine tune again with the digital tuner. Good luck! And go to justinguitar.com It's a good online site for newbies.

You're almost certainly trying to tune it an octave too high. It's a common mistake. If you try to tune an ocatve too low the strings will be so floppy they can't play. If you tune an octave too high the tension will snap the strings. There should only be moderate tension on the strings. If a string is so tight that you're afraid it will snap, then tune to the octave lower. If the string then becomes so loose it won't play, then you've gone too far in the other direction. You should be able to tune the string yet still be able to grab it with your fingers and pull it out from the instrument slightly.

You may be tuning the string(s) an octave too high.

I suggest you start with the lowest E string first and get that in tune. Now, if you play five frets up on the E string, you'll get A. Tune the A string by ear so it's as close to the fifth fret on the E string as possible. Now, use the tuner to get it exactly right.

Proceed up the strings in the same way. Note that on the G string, you'll need the fourth fret for B, not the fifth fret!

As you tighten the strings, expect the neck to "give" a little so you may have revisit the strings quite a few times to get them all in tune.

Finally, a new instrument may only stay in tune for a few minutes at a time until everything settles into place.
