There is an inner barrel that holds the cut rock as a whole piece and an outer barrel that allows cuttings from the diamond bit to flow along with mud, upward from the bit, between the barrels.

The advantage is that you actually have whole rock to analyze and you can see all of the sedimentary structures, fractures and rock components clearly. Coring is becoming a bit of a lost art in terms of the number of companies that do it. It is a fairly expensive process because of the round trip time it takes should the core "jam off" or the bit burn out. I always try to cut a core in an objective zone, to make sure of what we have before proceeding.

Core barrel is attached to core bit and used for coring operations. Coring is a process by which we can get undisturbed sample from the borehole. Coring is very expensive and slow so it is usually done in exploratory wells not development wells. Coring for 100 ft interval may take a week while drilling at 120-150 ft/hr is normal these days. So normal drilling is the normal process while coring is the exception

Note: I can send you some training videos about geological and drilling (including coring process and CORE ANALYSIS)
