If the phone is a 2G phone, that is all it will do, 2G. So unless you plan to somehow swap the guts of the phone for the guts of a 3G phone, it will be easier and cheaper to just replace the phone with a 3G or 4G enabled phone.
Think cars for a second. A 4 cylinder can't magically before a 6 or 8 cylinder engine, without of course putting in a 6 or 8 cylinder engine.
