You cannot unsalt food that is too salty, but there are ways to reduce the saltiness. If you have soup, stew or chili or something of that sort, cut a couple of potatoes in half and simmer them in your food for about 20-30 minutes. The potatoes will absorb some of the salt. If you have purchased smoked fish that is too salty, try soaking it in milk for 1/2 hour or so. This should work with salty meats also, but the milk could also make them spoil more quickly. Note: I have never tried soaking meat in milk, just smoked fish.

In many cases you will have to dilute it whether it is more vegetables and to half as much again. In other cases it may just need to use more water.

There are a few tricks, like if a soup or stew is too salty adding potatoes will help. Consider if to include the potatoes in the meal, or to lift them out.

Often if you lift them out you can reserve them for another meal later in the week

For soups and stuff add the potatoes as someone else said. Last year I had some ham that was SUPER salty and I soaked it in 7 up and it worked!! Took the saltiness totally away.

    Cannot be done.

Unless it is an item (like soup) where you can increase the volume by adding more stock.
