Why won't my Nikon shoot without flash?

Hi photography world.

I recently have been doing some long exposure work. Something I am not totally experienced with but have enough knowledge to pull off some amazing shots.

Anyway, I am using a D3200 with my kit lens since it is wide. I have stacked 2 ND filters and am stopped all the way to f22. I am using self timer. My camera seems to not shoot these 6+ seconds photos if my flash is closed. If I open it, i can then take a shot.

I am shooting manual. Focus is set to manual. My metering is matrix and even when i over expose the shot (by my meter reading) it still will not take the shot if flash is closed.

Thanks.

Get in your menu and turn off focus priority shutter release, or whatever Nikon calls it. When you trip the shutter release, the camera is attempting to focus (and of course can't because you are using the filters). Turning this off allows the shutter to open whether the camera thinks it is in focus or not.

im not following you. You are correct. I am trying to create a smeared affect. Be it sky, water, etc. But I don't see how your info helps. My flash should not be a factor, correct. But the camera is forcing me to use it at slow shutterspeeds even in manual. Why is this

The flash is probably in Auto. Turn it OFF. Use manual focus.

Pushing down the flash does't disable it. Turn it off in your menu.
