What genre / genres would you consider this writing?

Temporary Beauty

I carefully traced the final line of my intricate design into the sand, the soft surface giving way easily under my gentle touch, before standing back to admire its beauty before the waves decided to wash it away. I smiled.

“Perfect.” I said, admiring the shadows the moonlight added to my piece, I picked up my camera from around my neck, carefully adjusting the lens to best capture my image. I photographed my work from tonight, not wanting to forget the temporary beauty etched into the sandy ground.

Another smile left my lips as I began to lose myself in my own imagination once again. I began another piece, overwhelmed by the success of the previous, I lost myself. I don't know why but art, had this effect on me... I would often get so captivated and lost in thought, I could draw for hours without noticing a minute go by. It's like an entirely different world where I can just float aimlessly in the sky, listening to the soothing sound of a gentle breeze through the trees, and the soft lapping of waves on the shore...so far below my cloud residence.

“Hey Sara!” A male voice shouted, breaking me out of my dream like trance.

I sighed and looked to the ground, unhappy that my peace had been disturbed so soon.

“What is it Jamie?” I asked pointlessly as sped towards me... I knew exactly why he was here. He was because -

Update:

“Your brother asked me to bring you home...You know you shouldn't be out so late at night.” His usual overly sweet smile played across his face as he came to a stop beside my latest work of art. “Ahhh! So that's why you were out so late! Pretty... but it needs more dragons!”

I twitched, slightly irritated at his immaturity... what does he even know about art... Needs more dragons!? How dare he! I felt personally insulted by that comment.

He just doesn't understand how art works in my mind work

Update 2:

. It should be a reflection of feelings... Not just random dragons.

“Whatever Jamie... So, are you gonna walk me home or what?” I nudged him playfully. I just couldn't stay mad at him and his goofy smile. I began to walk ahead, and as expected Jamie followed closely like an obedient puppy.

As per usual the walk home was silent, and awkward. Why can't he just speak! He knows how awkward I feel when its silent. God dammit Jamie say someth-

Update 3:

“Say Sara...” he whispered, his normally bright, golden eyes were a dulled, seemingly glazed over with thought.

“...Yes?”

“Why do you only ever draw in sand...? Why not create something more permanent? Your drawings are always so nice, it seems a shame to just let them get washed away by the tide.”

What an odd question! Why would he even be thinking about such a thing? And obviously he wouldn't know why, he doesn't understand art. He doesn't understand me.

Update 4:

He doesn't understand life and how things work.... Maybe I should help him understand. Yeah... I will teach him. I will help him understand how I think.

“Because that what is like in reality.” I paused, his blue eyes meeting my own grey ones. “ I make things that are temporary because that is the truth. I use my art to show the truth in myself. Neither I or you are immortal Jamie. No beauty lasts forever... ”

Update 5:

Hopefully it works this time!

The public's trastes change with time. What is a best seller today would not have been accepted ten years ago and ten years from now will be old fashioned. Stephen King, Michael Crichton, Jackie Suzann, John Updyke, James Gould Cozzens, each has had his or her day. Maybe you could write a New Riders of the Purple Sage for the 21st Century and revive the western. Basically, you can't predict what the public will love. My own cynical view is that the public's taste gets progressively more debased and ignorant. Clearly the most marketable today is anything that looks as though it has possibilities for a TV or movie adaptation. Roman a clef of some easily attacked profession and decades long family dramas, with some kinky sex.

Are you looking for feedback? I don't think you are (your grammar/punctuation are...ailing). A genre would be romance, science fiction, young adult, and there are subgenres of each and crossovers/fusions of different genres. From this excerpt, the reader would have great difficulty assigning a genre to it, because so far it isn't *about* anything. Even though Sara is focused on her art and Jamie doesn't understand it, that's still not a story. We don't have a plot point to begin with. (Sara's 'I will teach him' isn't enough to go on.) This is definitely written by a young woman and is about a young woman, so the easy slot to put it in is YA, except there's not actual story that would tell us to put it in a subgenre like family, romance, suspense, etc.

Can you be more specific with what you're asking in this question? I'd like to actually be helpful.

Hard to say. Would need more of the story. Maybe just fantasy.

Genre is a specific type of music, film, or writing. Your favorite literary genre might be science fiction, and your favorite film genre might be horror flicks about .............

In music, genre refers to musical style such as jazz, salsa or rock. In film or literature, the genre is determined by the subject, setting or plot of the story. When you are wandering around a book store, books are usually arranged by genre. Many genres, such as "mystery" or "fantasy," overlap in film and literature, while others, such as "romantic comedy" in film or "historical fiction" in books, are specific to one or the other.
