Would Cotto vs Canelo be the BIGGEST fight in the history of PR vs Mexico?

Considering their popularity, I think this may be the biggest and most popular fight in the history of the rivalry. What say you?

BQ: would it be the BEST fight? It'd be hard to even top the last big PR/Mexico fight (Cotto vs Margarito I), let alone a fight like Gomez-Pintor.

No. Not even close. You're talking about a very long and extensive historical rivalry. I'm not even sure I have time to list the Mexico vs PR Classics that would rank higher than this one.

    .

Sanchez vs Gomez, for those who can recall a time when the best actually fought the best, is just one great example.

    .

Gomez vs Pinter, Chavez vs Camacho. Even De la Hoya vs Trinidad, as boring a fight as that was, was a bigger event. We narrowly missed another potential war, Cuevas vs Benitez. However, they were overshadowed by two Americans and a Panamanian who just happened to share the same division.

    .

The one thing that Cotto vs Alvarez has going for it is that Alvarez is in the 5% club, that small group of boxers who earn more than the remaining 95%. For that reason, the they will make more money than their predecessors. Outside of that, the fight should be entertaining but it won't live up to it's hype and it certainly doesn't live up to some of the classics.

    .

Cotto is just not a marque fighter. He can't draw flies without a name opponent. There is a bit of nostalgia with him. He's that guy who was often overshadowed by his contemporaries. Most of them are gone now and Cotto remains, fighting only sparingly. He should be facing Golovkin but he'd rather stick it in the mouth of a rattlesnake first.

    .

  • No it's not. Sorry to say but I think it'd be a boring match. I'm Mexican and I'm going with Cotto on this one. Sorry but Canelo is slow and he doesn't hit as hard as he's made out to be. He did nothing to Trout and Lara's faces. Not even a cut or bruise.

Trinidad vs Oscar was bigger: both were unquestionably the best welterweights at the time and both were undefeated.

For the record: Alvarez, Cotto and Trinidad all have American citizenship so all are American as well.

Hell no. The biggest was Salvador Sanchez vs Wilfredo Gomez. Two true ATG's going at it.

FYI, Oscar is technically Mexican American.

Tito Trinidad vs Oscar de la Hoya is bigger than Canelo vs. Cotto in my opinion and this is to date.
