Do Google Chromebooks need security software as an essential part of Chromebook security? If Chromebooks need security software, where can I find Chromebook security software? In addition, is it true that Chromebooks are based on the inferior Ubuntu Linux? (I am asking from a Windows 8.1 computer.)

No, by default code signing is enforced, so you can be fairly sure you are actually running the code you think you are running. Not to say you can't run into any apps or extensions that are a bit sketchy. Nonetheless they are sandboxed and shouldn't mess up the base system. (which if it did happen would be caught on the next reboot anyways)
Sidenote.. chromeOS is based off of the hardened gentoo sources.

until the virus writers figure out how to exploit chromeOS.. you will proabably only get malware/adware that affects the browser (chrome)... in the form of an extension... removing any bad extensions or doing a reset to the browser will clear that up..
