Why is formaldehyde preferentially oxidised in a crossed Cannizzarro rxn?

Are there other reagents that are redoxed preferentially in the crossed Cannizzarro? (references appreciated)

This is a grad-schooll level question that really requires a search of the chemical literature.

I don't have access to my copy of March (Advanced Organic Chemistry), but the section in it would have references that should help.

IIRC, HCOOH is is both electronically and stericly most favored to be oxidized in the crossed Cannizzarro reaction.

Because formaldehyde has less steric hinderance.
