Why can't I burn an mp3 disc using iTunes?

Update:

I've previously burned mp3 discs using iTunes - my car stereo plays mp3 discs.

I've created a playlist, as normal, and selected the mp3 option; but then iTunes tells me I've opted to burn a data DVD, and won't let me burn an mp3 disc instead.

    Use a CD instead of a DVD.
