Basics and need to knows of Scuba Diving?

I am an outdoors enthusiast and I want to get into diving. I life in Florida, which I here is perfect for diving (I couldn't imagine it wouldn't be) and was wanted to find out a few things. I have researched a little bit and gained some knowledge, but I wanted to get real people's opinions. Some of the questions I have are:

1. Best place to get certified.

2. Should I get a PADI certification.

3. Best spots to dive in Florida (saltwater) not in the keys (I live in Central FL).

4. Best place to buy gear.

And anything else you may want to add from your personal experiences. Thanks!

1 – Best place to get certified depends on where you live. If you live in Gainesville I would not recommend you go to my favorite shop in Sarasota. Check with the dive shops in your area. A good thing to look for is the PADI 5 Star rating.

2 – You will need some kind of cert and a PADI cert is a perfectly good cert to get.

3 – The “best spots” depends on a lot of things. Where exactly do you live? What’s available to you? What are your skill and comfort levels? What are your transportation and financial resources? What kind of diving do you like and want to do?

I live in Sarasota and the area from Sarasota to St. Pete has a lot of good offshore diving areas and several charter boats to take you there. I also do a lot of diving in Gulf Shores, Alabama. I plan on exploring Panama City, Florida next.

Your local dive shop should be able to help you out with trips. There are also several springs to dive in Florida. I hear Jupiter on the east coast also has a lot of good diving.

4 – Where ever you think you can get a decent deal.

    1. Florida is a big state. Most places are similar. Just ask different shops and see which you seem to get along with best. Some are more low key than others.

    2. Yes. You will need some certification to go on most commercial dives.

    3. ?

    4. If you know what you want, call around for best prices. Otherwise, just have to shop around to find what you want. It depends what type of gear you want since not all shops sell the same brands/styles.
