How do you pick out the best router?

Update:

OK I have never worked with a router before so it is all greek to me. I just want to know what the letters mean and what brands are good. Like is N better than G and is NetGear better than Belkin?

It really don't make much difference. You will only get whatever speed your internet provider sends to your modem. The different speeds the routers shows is just the speeds that the router can handle if your internet provider can send that much speed to your modem.

Most of the time, the router doesn't make a difference to the internet speeds. I'd look for a high frequency area coverage so you can receive a good signal throughout the household. A router is normally provided to you anyway by your ISP? If not, a trusted brand router would be the best.

Look at what type it is like 802.11.g/n/a/ac/b and more. They all represent a different speed.
