Is it possible to SSH a chromebook? if so what would i use as the login credentials ex: (what name goes here)@192.168.0.1?

Probably not out of the box. But there may be an app you can install. E.g. on Android you can install an ssh server on a jailbroken device, or maybe if you don't need port 22 and can use one above 1024, a non jailbroken device.

On the ssh server I have, I can use any name but it gives me root access (it's a bit of a kludge, in my view).

If you actually have the device, it's fairly obvious if it is running ssh - just telnet or netcat to port22 and it should respond with a version string.
