Is my betta depressed or sick?

So I've had 2 bettas for about a year one is phoenix the other prince arora. Arora lives in a 5 gallon with a heater filter a snail and great parameters other than the carbonate hardness. I'm not sure how to fix that any ideas please? So arora sits in a corner constantly or he his in his pagoda or behind the heater. Phoenix lives in a 10 gallon with corries and tetras temporarily and pretty much the same stuff just more live plants. Phoenix NEVER sits in his pagoda or on plants unless it's night he's always up front pacing or swiming through the plants. So is it aroras personality or is he sick? What do I need to change? Sorry it's so long wanted to cover all the info.

I'm not an expert on fish, but I used to own some and a few of them liked to sit in the corners. It could be just their personality or loneliness. If you really care about these fish, call a local pet store and talk to them - maybe even have them over to check it out.

Is your tank cycled? If not this sounds like ammonia poisoning which is from having high levels of ammonia and nitrites.
