I am curious about the behavior of platies?

I was considering adding platies to my community tank with angel fish and a pearl gourami with very long fins.

I have read that platies might be fin nippy. And i have read the absolute opposite. I would not risk adding fin nippers to the tank. What is your experience with platies?

I have platys, they don't nip. They're very chill. The females usually stay together. The male will swim with the females but will sometimes swim out by himself.

The ratio is usually 1 male to 2 females. I like to have more than 2 females just to be on the safe side. An all female group is also possible. But IMO, a male and some females means free food for your other fish.

Platys don't retaliate to being nipped either. They just jump a little and swim away.

However, there may be that ONE platy that is just not your average. If so, make it feel secure by hiding places and such, but overall they're a pretty chill fish... except for the fact that they are horny little buggers, but this also means free food.

IME, I have platys with my male flame dwarf gourami. My male platy is a red wag. He swims with my girls sometimes, other times he's out exploring by himself, and sometimes, he follows my dwarf gourami, not to try to nip, but just to follow. My platy will be beside the gourami and they'll swim with each other. It's really cute!

Most are pretty chill, but any species has it's share of ultra mellow and and also ultra ornery. Depending on your tank size, could go with one male and three females or any combination of all females. Sufficient hiding places USUALLY prevents nippiness, the more secure they feel, the less likely to nip.

they do not fin nip I own two red coral platys and they haven't nipped anything but do get aggressive at each other when they want their fry to be dropped. plus they breed like crazy so the fry make get eaten unless their is heavy cover
