A sample containing only silicon and fluorine was decomposed yielding 9.27 mg of silicon and 17.5 mL of fluorine gas (density = 1.43 g/L).?

What is the empirical formula of the sample compound?

thanks!

    You have 9.27mg Si

    You have 17.5/1000*1.43 = 0.025g = 25mg

    Simplify by calling these g

    Si = 9.27g

    F = 25g

    Divide by atomic mass:

    Si = 9.27/28 = 0.33

    F = 25/19 = 1.32

    Remove fractions - multiply through by 3

    Si = 0.33*3 = 1

    F = 1.32*3 = 4

    Empirical formula SiF4
