Formatting with exFat not working?

I tried to format an external hard drive using the exFat option so I can use it on mac and pc. Problem is when i tried by right clicking the drive and selecting format then choosing exFat says "Windows was unable to complete the format"

I then was actually able to format it through console commands, it completed and ask me to name it or something so I did. But I cannot use the hard drive it just says "You need to format the disk in drive E: before you can use it" ..... but I supposedly did format it , so how can I fix this?

Erase it as exFAT in Disk Utility on the Mac.

OMG, what am I saying? I am actually answering the question "How can I do what I shouldn't do?"

If this drive is over 64GB, DO NOT USE exFAT. That's what Microsoft says and I agree. It will be very inefficient, and the level of inefficiency is related to the drive volume size, so a 500GB drive will be very inefficient, a 1TB drive very, very inefficient, and a 2TB drive HUGELY inefficient.

Format NTFS and then on the Mac use one of these two methods to enable full read-write support....

Buy and install this–> http://www.paragon-software.com/home/ntfs-mac/ (NTFS For Mac , $19.95)

    or follow all these steps...

    – Download and install OSXFuse, link below. You must install this first.

    – Make a new folder at /Library/Receipts called "MacFUSE Core.pkg" and for the nag pop-up about adding the extension, choose "Add".

    – Download NTFS-3G, link below.

    – Mount the NTFS-3G image, but DO NOT install; It has two packages inside, and will try to install the defunct MacFuse first, which would fail. Instead....

    – Right-click the "Install NTFS-3G.mpkg" file, and choose "Show Package Contents".

    – A new Finder window will open. Change the view option to list or columns.

    – Navigate to Contents > Packages.

    – Open "NTFS-3G.pkg" and install. You may notice in the installer screen that the “MacFuse Compatibility Layer” is NOT selected. Select it; continue the installation.

    – Install Fuse_Wait.

    – Restart.

Yes, it's a lot of putzing around, but that's how you save 20 bucks.

    http://sourceforge.net/projects/catacombae/files/l... (NTFS-3G)

Source(s): There are no "sources" that show this complete process. I pieced it together and fixed two problems others couldn't fix.
