1972 Dolphins are the only team to Rank #1 in both Offense and Defense both Points and Yards. They went undefeated 17-0.

This isn't an easy question to answer because there isn't one solitary statistic used to rank offenses and defenses. A variety of stats are used: touchdowns, turnovers, first downs, etc

    .

But there are two stats that tend to be looked at the most.

For offense, highest point total and most yardage gained are the most common stats used.

Similarly for defense, fewest points allowed and fewest yardage allowed are the stats often used to rank.

Since the 1970 AFL/NFL merger very few teams have come close to being ranked 1st in all four of those categories.

In 1996 the Green Bay Packers defense was ranked 1st in both points allowed and yards allowed. But while their offense ranked 1st in points scored they ranked 5th in yards gained.

It should come as no surprise that the Pack won the Super Bowl that season.

But there are three teams with better rankings and yet they didn't even reach the Super Bowl.

In 1973 the Los Angeles Rams offense ranked 1st in both points scored and yardage gained.

And while their defense ranked 1st in yards allowed, they ranked 4th in points allowed.

They lost at Dallas in the Divisional Playoffs.

The 1987 San Francisco 49ers offense ranked 1st in both points scored and yardage gained.

But while their defense ranked 1st in yards allowed they ranked 3rd in points allowed.

They were shockingly defeated at home by Minnesota in the Divisional Round.

The 49ers of 1995 arguably come the closest.

Their offense ranked 1st in points and 2nd in yards and their defense ranked 1st in yardage allowed and 2nd in points allowed.

They were denied in the NFC Championship.at Dallas.

HOWEVER...there is one team that DID manage to finish the season ranked 1st in all four categories.

And it should come as no surprise that they not only won the Super Bowl that season, they also completed their entire 17 game schedule without a single defeat. Yes, the 1972 Miami Dolphins were that good.

And since you're probably now wondering... the nearly perfect 2007 New England Patriots offense ranked 1st in points scored and yards gained but their defense ranked 4th in both points allowed and yardage allowed.
