It depends on the company that provides the software that you're installing. While not was prevalent as Windows installers, I have seen some software titles for OS X that have included options to install tool bars or browser extensions.

Mac OS X doesn't tick you. Windows doesn't tick you, either. Certain websites tick you. Avoid by paying close attention to what you select / check / tick.

No, they won't install anything else than the software. It's one of the reasons I like OS X.
