How can I get a veteran's ID card? I was told that I could get one by going to a VA hospital. But the lady at the VA said I earn too much.?

How can I get a veteran's ID card? I was told that I could get one by going to a VA hospital. So yesterday I went to the VA hospital and began the application and the lady asked me how much money I currently earned and being an engineer at GE I make pretty good and when I told her the amount she said I make too much money. However, I need a Vet ID in order to take advantage of restaurants, electronics stores, funiture stores, etc.. that offer discounts. Can't you get an Vet ID card even if you don't qualify for medical benefits?

Originally when they revamped the veterans ID card program two years ago with a new ID card being issued they advertised that every veteran should get or be issued one. They then later realized the cost of that and started to realize that only those veterans interacting with and using the Veterans Health Care system should get the new ID card and so that is why you still sometimes see this being promoted or advertised. Many but not all military discounts apply to active duty or retired military also and will stipulate that in their fine print and what not. Some states do indicate it on your drivers license and some don't. You might also consider joining AARP, or the VFW or American Legion. All of those also qualify for discounts at a lot of places if you ask and by joining the American Legion or VFW you would have a membership card indicating your veteran status.

Carry a copy of your DD-214.

If you do not qualify for VA health services you cannot get a VA ID card.

The federal government does not issue ID cards for veterans for identification purposes only. They do only for specific services, such as VA healthcare, which, as you stated, you don't qualify for. Some states have special cards you can get to identify you as a veteran. Check with your state to see if they have one, and how to get one. It most likely will involve providing a copy of your DD214.

you cannot get an ID just because you want discounts. the VA issues IDs so that you are able to use VA SERVICES.

Bring your DD214, two forms of indentification and go directly to the I D section of the VA.
