Mr Friendly Policeman of my childhood (I'm a Boomer) is now part of a militarized storm-trooper army of occupation (I'm retired military and I mean every word of that). Some anonymous black-clad ninja with some alphabet-soup acronym on the body armor can kick in your door or drag you out of your car with no accountability. Beat you to death or put half a clip into you if you object. Secret "security" courts with unappealable decisions. Can't travel without being groped by uniformed flunkies with fake badges. Random roadblocks to check your "papers". We're already well into Gestapo and KGB territory.

I'm a nearly-elderly well-educated, middle class white dude; served my country for three decades, and I'm afraid of "them". Hell, I'm a Justice of the Peace, technically one of "them" and "they" still scare me (but I do enjoy performing same-gender marriages, sky-clad Wiccan hand-fastings a specialty). One of my coven-sisters is a police officer, one of the dwindling number of "good ones".
