Why is my Vizio television messing up?

Okay so I'll explain as best I can. My Vizio TV won't produce sound. Not as if the speakers were blown. But when I turn the TV on from the power button on the remote the volume automatically turns itself all the way down. No button on the side of the TV works and only the power button on the remote works. The volume bar is permanantly on the bottom of the screen with the zero on as if someone was holding down the volume down button. The problem was fixed while I wasn't at home by someone who doesn't know what they did to fix it. It worked right for about 3 days. I then went to turn the TV on yesterday and when I did I dropped the remote and when the TV came on the remote hit the ground and the problem came back. Logic would say that it has something to do with the remote, but I have taken the batteries out of the remote and even removed the remote from the room and the problem persists. Vizio tech support doesn't know what's wrong and I don't have the money to send it to them. Now if I were to hold a button down for at least ten seconds and use the volume up button on the remote all buttons work. But then as soon as I let go of the button I'm holding the TV turns itself down again. I now know that the problem can be fixed without spending money but without prior knowledge of how said person fixed the TV I don't know what to do and I don't wanna go poking around in the TV if I don't have to. Anyone else have this problem with their TV and get it fixed?

Well... it's a Vizio. You bought a discount television. You had faith that it was 'just as good' as the better brands, but 'belief' is not 'reality'.

    (sigh)

Find where the Infra Red sensor is on the front of the television. Use a piece (or two) of masking tape to block the sensor.

Now - turn on the TV and try using the side buttons to adjust the volume up.

If the TV behaves normally - then there is something in the room that is broadcasting Infra Red noise, but the TV thinks it is being told to make the volume go down. If this is the case - you have to hunt in your room for some lights or reflections that might be causing this.

(When the TV appeared to work normally for those 3 days - was this during the day or night and are you trying to watch at a different time of day or night?)

You might try this: get a toilet paper tube and using masking tape, position this over the TV sensor so it points right at your main TV seat.

Might be with the remote. Maybe replace that first.
