Americans who are against having free healthcare - why is that?

I live in Britain. If I have a heart attack and need a transplant, if I have cancer I'll get chemotherapy, I will get treatment and I won't pay for any of it. It comes out of our national insurance and overall tax system.

Can someone explain why some Americans really hate the idea of Obamacare, as it's called? from what I understand, its that if you can't afford your own healthcare insurance, then it can be paid for you, so you aren't left with a crippling debt on top of having cancer?

You have the patient point of view: We are not all healthcare patients in the US, some people work in the healthcare or healthcare insurance industry.

Free healthcare in the US will come at a price - to someone.

Healthcare has been a goldmine in the US for decades for the healthcare providers and healthcare insurers. You are talking about something that would destroy that goldmine. If we in the US were to develop a free government run single payer system, it would eliminate a majority of the healthcare insurance industry, and because it would be a single payer, it would severely lower the amount of payment to healthcare providers.

You can easily determine who in the US are against those changes.

Obamacare is not free healthcare or a single payer or government run system.

It is a law making some changes to healthcare insurance that restricts their actions and lowers their administrative costs/profits, and it lowers some of the government payments (Medicare payments) to healthcare insurance companies, and at the same time it lowers government payments (Medicare) to healthcare providers.

If you look from the healthcare provider/insurer view, you can easily determine who is against that, and for that matter you can easily determine

    why

those people would be against that.

Americans are not against having free healthcare. Nothing is free anywhere in this world, taxes taxes taxes

American health Ins. is the cause not the cure!

Americas health care, is the most expensive in the world. The World Health Organization rank Americas health care at 16th out of the 16 industrialized nations.

Americas health care will provide patients with expensive procedures, or medicines that they know have zero percent effect. The insurance companies will approve these procedures because it helps justify high their inflated rates.

Americans pay for many prescription drugs, that are purchased over the counter in every other country in the world, for a fraction of the price.

Americas health care system and Health Insurance are corrupt, rich and powerful. The rich and powerful govern the world!

it's a matter of priorities. In the US we have a health care industry made up of maybe five or six huge corporations. They OWN practically the entire health care industry. They run the hospitals and clinics and doctors' offices, and all the doctors and other 'health care professionals' work for them. They are big campaign contributors, so their continued profits come first. The top priority of Obama's plan, as with the previous situation, was corporate profits. Health care is seen primarily as a wealth creator for investors. In every other country the top priority of the health care system is HEALTH CARE!

When Obama began his campaign for president he said he would push for a 'Canadian Style' single payer system. This was the solution that 60-70% of Americans have favored in polls for decades! But not long after his campaign got underway, he said he'd reconsidered. He didn't think a single payer system would work 'in a country like this'. Now he went for the same kind of plan proposed by several previous presidents, most of them Republican. A system that maintains control of the health care infrastructure by a handful of non-competitive corporations. Actually, since Obama's plan went into effect the stock of the corporations has doubled!

This is what we sometimes call 'American-Style Capitalism', capitalism managed for greed and the concentration of wealth. We don't care if we live or die, we're going to make corporations rich if it kills us! 8^P

Obamacare (The Affordable Care Act) isn't free health insurance. Medicaid is free health insurance for the poor with limited or no incomes. Medicaid is handled through the states. Because of the ACA states have the option to expand Medicare to people with incomes higher than previously but not all states have chosen to do that.

People who don't have healthcare through their current or past employers or privately can opt for insurance under the ACA but they must still pay premiums for the coverage. Some premiums will be subsidized by the federal government for those with incomes under certain amounts but they still must pay premiums.

So aside from Medicaid which has been around for decades for the poor, America does not have free health care for anyone else. People are unwilling to pay higher taxes (MUCH higher taxes) for everyone to be covered for health needs. It's as simple as that.

Frankly I am willing to pay higher taxes if it would mean that everyone would have free health care but I sure don't see that happening in my lifetime (I am 69) if ever in the US. You want to get a President elected? All he/she has to do is say that they will reduce income taxes. It's stupid.

The children of the poor have Medicaid, so that's free Healthcare.

There is no free health care. Someone ALWAYS PAYS. Generally the middle class taxpayer.

I'm always amazed at those that think the government provides free stuff.

listen, people are retarded. especially here in america. they hate obamacare without even know what it is, because it has obamas name in it. republicans watch fox news channel which basically preys on fickle, religious folk, and the main objective of the channel is to bash obama and everything he is about... having said that, i recently applied for healthcare related to this, and i am pretty poor and i have an injury p[reventing me from working... and i still didnt get coverage. however i am not upset, because they waived my fee for me, so i dont have to pay the new penalty for not having health care insurance. after that happened, i realized the way the insurance is designed is like this- if you HAVE the money, you need to buy health insurance these days, or you will get the fine. if youre broke, they wwill waive your fee. its a good idea in my opinion bc if you have the money, why not get yourself covered? dont listen to dumb conservatives complain about things that thhe news told them to complain about

Many still have the old Puritan belief that poor people are wicked and deserve to suffer. Some profit from faith-healing rackets.
