How much thrust is needed to lift 1kg off the ground and keep it in the air?

Think of helicopters.

How much force or downwards thrust is needed to lift one kilo off the ground?

For example say I gave you a watermelon which weighed 1kg..

And then let's say I add a small electric rotar, attached to the melon.

How much power, lift, thrust or whatever it is called. Is needed to lift that 1 kg water melon off the ground and able to fly?

You need to have enough lift from the thrust to lift both the melon and the lifting device (e.g., drone). So T > Wd + Wm; where Wd is the drone weight and Wm is the melon.

Note that T - (Wd + Wm) = f = (Md + Mm)A > 0 will accelerate A the lift off. The M's are the respective masses. But once the requisite lift speed V = AT is reached, the thrust is needed only to overcome the combined weight. So you can throttle back a bit to F = Wd + Wm.

You gave Mm = 1 kg, but we also need the Md = ? for the drone.

    Lift force F ≥ m*g ≥ 9.806 N
