It depends on what type of metal you want to play, but I can tell you that Ibanez Soundgear bass guitars (SR500/SR505) are legendary when it comes to metal in general. Many musicians love their thin, fast necks, and even the 5-string models are easy to get around. The string spacing is a bit narrow compared to many basses, but generally they're good either playing with a pick or finger style. The Ibanez SR505 is one of the best bass guitars for extreme metal. Other good ones are: Fender, Squire, Yamaha, Wal and Washburn, but Ibanez is one of the best.

Metal is not music, just noise. Bluegrass music rules!
