Typically, once the ex is identified and located, he is given the opportunity to sign a consent to adoption. If he does not respond, or declines, court action is necessary to terminate his parental rights if the adoption is to proceed.
If you have an attorney, he/she should know how far along you are in the process, as should the social agency doing the home study.
When all goes smoothly, a step parent adoption can be completed within a few months. More time is needed if it is necessary to terminate the father's rights.

I don't know specifically. But my step dad tried adopting me. And had all of the paper work done in about 2 weeks, but they needed to ask my biological father, he was an abusive creep, and my mom decided she didn't want to face him, soooo I never was. As long as you have the father sign abandonment papers, it is a relatively quick process, since you already have custody they don't have to vet him, so it is literally JUST paperwork, if it doesn't work out for some reason, make sure to explain why it didn't to her, my parents never told me why I wasn't adopted, and So I felt unloved and unwanted. And since you've already done that, it should be 2 to 3 week's.

Want to know how to get your ex back? Change yourself. Don't worry about changing other people, worry about changing yourself. Go to https://tr.im/l4PaM
Once you do that then you can start to worry about getting back together with your ex, other wise you will find that you are fighting about all the same things and getting no where. Do what it takes and I promise things will work out in your favor.
The funny thing is I came to the realization that I had to change a little too late. After I was kicked out and after I was about to lose the only things that truly mattered to me - her love. A funny thing happens when we truly love someone and lose them. We do what ever it takes to get them back. For me I had to drop bad habits that had caused not only our relationship to sour but practically every other relationship I had had in the past. Not only with women, but with friends, co-workers, family, you name it.
Which is why I say to you as my ex at the time said to me, the only thing you can do is change yourself. Work on yourself and improve on the person that you already are. Drop the negative things in your life that don't belong there and you will see all of your relationships start to take off to new heights.
