Can i claim my mother on my tax return as a dependant?

can i claim my mother on my tax return she doesnt live with me she is on social assistance and they pay for her rent at her 1 room apartment unfortunatly she doesnt get alot of money from social assistance since they are paying rent for her and i helped her over 2014 with grocerys and transportation

    If you pay for over 1/2 of her total financial need for the year, you can claim her as your dependent even though she does not live with you.

    That means you must prove if audited what you gave her over the year. I claimed my mother one year & I had cancelled checks to show what I paid but that was denied because it wasnt more than 1/2.

    She needs to live with you to be a dependent.
