Calculate the empirical formula of the compound??

A 2.9990 g sample of a new compound has been analyzed and found to contain the following masses of elements: carbon, 1.1610 g; hydrogen, 0.29240 g; oxygen, 1.5455 g. Calculate the empirical formula of the compound.

To find empirical formula first calculate the mol for every element :

mol = mass / molar mass

    mol C = 1.1610/12.010 = 0.134 mol

    mol H = 0.2924/1.007 = 0.29 mol

    mol O = 1.5455/15.999 = 0.096 mol

then we get the mol ration (dividing by least mol value)

    0.134/0.096 = 1.395 , 0.29/0.096 = 3.02 , 0.096/0.096 = 1

C1.3H3O1 ( we multiply all by 3 to get a close right number)

    Empirical Formula :C4H9O3
