Christians - literal interpretation of the bible - if Yes, how do you handle the bad stuff?

“Slaves, submit yourselves to your masters with all respect, not only to the good and gentle but also to the cruel.” (1 Peter 2:18),

“So the man took his concubine and sent her outside to them, and they raped her and abused her throughout the night, and at dawn they let her go. At daybreak the woman went back to the house where her master was staying, fell down at the door and lay there until daylight. When her master got up in the morning and opened the door of the house and stepped out to continue on his way, there lay his concubine, fallen in the doorway of the house, with her hands on the threshold. He said to her, ‘Get up; let’s go.’ But there was no answer. Then the man put her on his donkey and set out for home.” (Judges 19:25-28)

“Happy is he who repays you for what you have done to us – he who seizes your infants and dashes them against the rocks.” (Psalm 137:9)

“This is what the Lord Almighty says... ‘Now go and strike Amalek and devote to destruction all that they have. Do not spare them, but kill both man and woman, child and infant, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.’” (1 Samuel 15:3)

“I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she must be silent.” (1 Timothy 2:12)

Update:

I'm liking the massive critique in my choice of quotations - obviously I am not a bible scholar, and the general answer is people are not taking this stuff literally, rather they are seeing it as an interpretation of history rather than the WORD of God.

At this time in the USA 30% of all girls and woman have been Rapped! Another 36% of girls and woman have had attempted rapes yet got away! Another 16% of boys and young men have been rapped by other males!

We are all here being tested. Those that do NOT Believe in God can Not feel any Love! Only their own selfish Lusts! Just as he had all the rapist there. We also have them here -Now! What is your solution Here?

In Samuel ALL those people did Not believe in God and IF they lived, their evil dreamed up beliefs would have spread though God's followers and Crimes go crazy! The Animals to be put to death so the Jewish would Not go in hoping to Kill all the people only with greedy plans to keep all they could for themselves! (animals and slaves)

If one dose Not have a Catholic Bible; Jesus had Woman disciples! (The Catholic religion has changed them to men's names!) Paul is telling those people to keep the woman in lower positions because their their beliefs before Paul convinced them to become Christian. They still had to change over time to woman equal!

Rabbi Jesus also states in Matthew 5:17-20 that he was Not here to start a new religion but to fix the Jewish one! Also requiring us to keep Obeying ALL of the 613 Commandments that God gave to Moses (That most religions are Not even admitting to these days!) Decisions were make that the new followers, since not use to ALL these required Commandments, to Start with a few. Yet ALL of the others - they did have to learn and Obey!

Some Bibles like the KJB that has over 36,000 words that have been added, removed, or ordered changed to very different words by King James Catholic order! Do Not have correct words! KJB only religions claim If they do Not know what it means, that they do not have to obey it. Very lazy of them! So we have to be careful with what words really were!

You do not really want an answer, do you? By having a hard attitude towards God you can distance your self from eternal damnation. The "bad stuff" is easily understood seen in context, not ripped out verse by verse.

    1 Peter

2:18 Servants, be submissive. One’s Christianity does not give the right to rebel against one’s superior in the social structure (see notes on 1Co 7:21–23; Eph 6:5; Col 3:22; Phm; see also Ex 21:26, 27; Lv 25:39–43; Dt 23:15, 16), no matter how unfair or harsh he may be.

    Psalms 137

137:8, 9 blessed … the one. For these will be God’s human instruments used to carry out His prophesied will for the destruction of Babylon.

God several times ordered Israel to do genocide. That will happen again to His glory, not to our comfort.

    1 Samuel

15:3 utterly destroy. God gave Saul an opportunity to redeem himself with obedience. The judgment was to be a complete and total annihilation of anything that breathed. God’s judgment was severe on those who would destroy His people. It was equally severe to those who disobeyed (cf. Achan in Jos 7:10–26).

    Judges

19:25 the man seized his concubine and brought her out to them. This is unthinkable weakness and cowardice for any man, especially a priest of God. Apparently he even slept through the night, or stayed in bed out of fear, since he didn’t see her again until he awakened and prepared to leave (cf. v. 28).

    1 Timothy

Women are not allowed in leadership

2:12 I do not allow. The Gr. word for “allow” is used in the NT to refer to allowing someone to do what he desires. Paul may have been addressing a real situation in which several women in Ephesus desired to be public preachers. to teach. Paul used a verbal form of this Gr. word that indicates a condition or process and is better translated “to be a teacher.” This was an important, official function in the church (see Ac 13:1; 1Co 12:28; Eph 4:11). Thus Paul is forbidding women from filling the office and role of the pastor or teacher. He is not prohibiting them from teaching in other appropriate conditions and circumstances (cf. Ac 18:26; Tit 2:3, 4). exercise authority over. Paul forbids women from exercising any type of authority over men in the church assembly, since the elders are those who rule (5:17). They are all to be men (as is clear from the requirements in 3:2, 5).

Look !!! Why is this reported : “So the man took his concubine and sent her outside to them, and they raped her and abused her throughout the night, and at dawn they let her go-- because it happened. Why do YOU say it means approval. Obviously not.

There is an excellent book on this topic :

Reading the Bible with the Dead: What You Can Learn from the History of Exegesis that You Can't Learn from Exegesis Alone Paperback

    by John L. Thompson (Author)

writings often display strikingly contemporary interests and sensitivities to the meaning and moral implications of the Bible's difficult narratives. John Thompson here presents nine case studies in the history of exegesis -- including the stories of Hagar and Jephthah's daughter, the imprecatory psalms, and texts that address domestic relations, particularly divorce -- in order to demonstrate the valuable insights into Scripture that we can gain not only from what individual commentators say but from fifteen centuries' cumulative witness to the meaning of Scripture in the life of the church.

    Context is King.

    # 1 Peter 2:18 : This is a direct command. First century Christians were not encourage to rebell against their owners. Today most people are not slaves but many of us are employees, we should apply the same principle to those that we work for.

#” (Judges 19:25-28) This is not a command that tells Christians to gang rape women, it is a sad and tragic report of the rape of a woman. The nation actually went to war over this matter - which in the end was admirable. I don't believe any modern nation would declare war on the basis of the rape of one woman.

    # (Psalm 137:9) This was not a command for christians to kill babies, it is however how those who had had their own babies killed in this way felt. The cry for revenge is often heard even today during times of war. Newspapers report such things, the bible reported it in the past.

#(1 Samuel 15:3) This was a commission for total warfar. It was given from God against the Amelekites who had previously launched an unprovoked attack on the Israelites.

#1 Timothy 2:12 This IS a Christian requirement, it doesn't mean Christian women cannot utter a word at Christian gatherings (because this would mean they couldn't even say "Amen" at the end of prayers) it means that Christian women are not to take the lead in worship when there are qualified men in assistance. Leadership in the Christian system is to be exclusively the domaine of male members. Something JEHOVAH'S WITNESSES adhere to.

    Hope that helps,

    SUNSHINE

    >It dealt with reality of life when there were many slaves in pagan Roman empire,

so Christians were instructed to live in peace and love with everyone.

Except that junior says that owning slaves was cool and endorsed Num 31:18.

We already know you haven't read the bible. No need to keep proving it.

Much of that is hyperbole. The slaves are the apostles and their successors as the clergy. Not slave slaves, but slaves to the Lord and God is the master. Jesus taught that normal slavery is wrong when He taught the Golden Rule, and that all people are equal.

They just claim it doesn't mean what it says, or that it was giving examples of bad behavior.

  • Typical christian answers. You're misinterpreting it, its out of context, you don't understand it. Its pointless to ask this question.
