How much should I save for a trip to Niagara Falls?
I want to surprise my girlfriend on her birthday next year and bring her to Niagara Falls. We re both in college, going to University Of Illinois in Champaign, IL. So i was looking and it already is like a 10 hour drive there. plus i dont know how much a hotel would be and food there. So basically how much should I save up for the next year that ll cover gas, food, any activities you do there( i have no idea, all i know is shes always wanted to go there and really really wants to go sometime), and a hotel if necessary. And also any cool activities you all did when you were there so we can have some ideas would be nice.

If you are going to the Canadian side you both need your Border crossing stuff. Hint a Passport.
You can stay cheaper just out side of Niagara Falls. You DO NOT need a view of the Falls from the Hotel Room. HINT how long did you plan to look out the window?
You can easily walk up yo the Falls for a closeup view. As you are om a Budget staying a few hundreds yards away saves a lot on each night and gives you the money for dinner or whatever.
Fuel Cost. You can use Gas buddy.com for that..
Hotel/Motel/ Many sites to choose look at both Niagara Falls NY and Niagara Falls Ontario.
You DO NOT have to stay in Niagara Falls There are many other nearby places too. Use your map and check some other towns for your budget accommodation.
Your choice the 5 star place or something cheaper. I assume you want to do other things then spend your time in the Hotel Fitness centre, pool, and restaurant.
Budget for admission to activity or tourist site. $50 for two gets you into most things.
Suggest you look into a AAA membership. It comes with FREE travel help. Maps, Guide Books and DISCOUNTS.
Meals you can do the expensive thing or depending on the weather something cheaper like a Picnic in the park.
Set your Budget and then plan what you can do for the money you have.
As it is about a 12 hour drive. (You stop to eat and other things)
Depending what time you depart your first night could be miles away in a much cheaper place. Getting to destination the next morning for a full day of sights before you get to your next sleeping place.

Go to Expedia.com or Booking.com or Hotels.com and search for the costs of hotels on the days that you expect to be in Niagara Falls. I would be surprised if the hotels cost you any less than $150 per night...More if you want a view of the falls from your room. This is after all, a tourist town.
Typically, I allot about $50 per person per day for food. But assuming you want to go out for dinner, maybe have some wine or such, you'll probably want to double that.
It's over 600 miles from Champaign to Niagara Falls, so expect at least one tank of gas to get to Canada, and one to get back to Illinois. There are also tolls on the bridge in Sarnia or Detroit to get to Canada, and most places you go in Niagara will have some sort of entry fee (museums, dance clubs, Maid of the Mist tour, etc.)
