Is blueray an upgrade or a reason for phasing out my DVD player with a new blueray DVD player?

Blueray discs produce a finer image and are not playable on DVD players. However Blueray players are downward compatible, and will play DVDs,and music CDs, so there is no reason to not buy a Blueray player, when the time comes. They are also no longer expensive alternatives. As the DVD is going the way of eight track tapes, There is no reason to purposely seek out DVD players any more.

It's definitely an upgrade. Pictures are much clearer. You can also play dvds on a blu-ray player. So yes it is a reason to phase out a dvd player. I know I did.

Currently, there is no reason to replace a DVD player with another DVD player. All Blu-ray players will play Blu-ray disks, DVD disks as well as audio CDs, and the price point for a nicely-featured unit with Wifi is under $100.

BluRay is a high definition video format. DVD is a medium definition video format.

If you have a large hidef TV, say, 46 inches or larger, then having a BluRay player and playing BluRay discs in it will give you a higher quality of picture.

But, to get the full effect of that higher video quality, you need to play BluRay discs in the BluRay player. Also, all BluRay players will play all DVDs and CDs.

The last answer pretty much nailed it. DVD is a medium density format compared to blue ray which is a much higher density format. Blue ray media players are for backwards comparable and can at dvds and CDs alike.
