We used to use Brita, but the filters didn't last long and the water still tasted a little off.

We now use ZeroWater. The filters are more expensive but last 3-4 months. The pitcher also comes with a water tester that measures the number of particles (dust, etc.) per parts million.

Our tap water, unfiltered, has about 30 ppm. The Brita filter gets this down to about 9ppm. The ZeroWater filter, however, gets it down to 0.

I have a under counter RO (reverse osmosis) attached to the water faucet in the kitchen sink for washing vegetables/fruits etc but not for cooking like soup/stew etc because RO water removes impurities and also nutrients like magnesium and calcium about 99%. So for cooking, I use a Brita On-Tap faucet water and also for drinking, a Brita filtered pitcher type on the counter top.

If you have access to a Costco, the one they sell is a bit of a pain to install but provides amazing pure water. Otherwise on the Brita or Pur, they work okay, I find the water still tastes odd. Maybe find a friend who owns one and test how it tastes to you.

A cheap way to get rid of the chlorine is fill a jug of water and let it set, open, for 24 hours. the chlorine will dissipate. Its what tropical fishtank owners do.

    Won't cost you a thing.
