Shopping for a hunter - what do you guys think of him?

Update:

If you see any "training" problems, disregard those. I am willing to train the heck out of something. I'm looking purely for talent.

I see a low jumper horse, or low level hunter. His canter is stiff a lot of the time and he doesn't always use his back legs under him at the canter. He kind of pogo-sticks along, which might be trainable or it might just be his way of going. But a high level hunter he is not.

He drifts out on turns. Again, training and a strong outside leg and rein might just be the cure. Seems like he needs more flat work.

I do like that he judges a good height to jump and seems laid back about it.

I wonder what the price is.

I'd like to know more details.

Either way he is a project for sure.

I'm not an expert but here is what I saw.

    1. He washes out to the right (see drift on approach to first jump)

    2. He carries himself after the jump and appears to need very little leg support from rider (eager to jump)

    3. His knees looked great in the one jump (like the fourth) where I could actually see them

    4. He landed on the correct lead every time (Luck or is he just that smart he knows where he's going next/where he's coming from...)

    5. Over the last jump, it looked like he wings/folds his front legs out to the right (it's hard to see.....)

    6. He took the tight/short distances with ease and no worries. I didn't see any long ones.

    7. He didn't have any major issues with his rider - no great balls of fire pulling, no running out etc.

    8. He appears to sight in to the jump about 5-6 steps out - note the head raise - Oh! there it is!

    9. He often drops his head 2 strides after the fence. This doesn't appear to be anything but him stretching. It doesn't worry me that he might throw in a buck.

    10. He has a great attitude in general. Looks simple but potentially a bit of a handful on a new spring day etc..

    11. He judged the height to jump accurately each time and I didn't see him knock any rails, dangle his feet, or have issues clearing anything even though there were no ground poles on all and some were open hanging swedish style verticals.

Overall very nice. Looks a teensy bit of a hard to steer horse to me.

Very nice! I like him! One thing though is he seems very excited and eager to jump, he may be resistant to just hunters, to me he'd be a jumper, not a hunter. Give him a test ride and see if he is willing and not resistant to slowing down some. Other than that he is beautiful! Just his personality would determine if he'd be a hunter that enjoys his job

I like him very much, he's handsome, forward going but still responsive to you, both over jumps and on the flat. He's steady and bold enough over the jumps and shows the ability to jump higher if necessary. If you're willing to train him as you say, a vet checks him out as sound, and you can finance it, then at least give him serious consideration. Good luck.
