aquarium hood?

Ok so I just bought a 36 inch hood and it says do not use over open water, Can I anyway?

    You didn't buy a hood, you bought a light fixture without a hood. Either buy a glass cover or

    Return it and buy a hood before you electrocute yourself or damage the light fixture
