is a 300watt heater to much?

Hello is a 300 watt heater to much for a 40 gallon breeder?

    Yes, too much

    3-5 watts per gallon is the range needed for most climates / room temps

    5 watts in cooler climates, 3 watts in southern states/regions

    Having too high a wattage is not recommended because if a heater fails, they usually fail in the on position; allowing the heater to overheat the tank severely in minutes or hours

    Should be OK, but if the heater thermostat "sticks" it's a recipe for fish stew.
