Hello,
I view it as an angel who has either lost its innocence or sinned, and as punishment has lost its privileges of being one and is now fallen. The angel could also have done something wrong but is keeping it in, continuing to try and stay on the right path. It's a wonderful piece, by the way. :)

An angel choosing the dark side , as in a teenager making bad decisions , therefore its losing what it's dignity , its wings (what makes it an angel)
