Can the administrator of an estate sign a check made out to the deceased?

My dad passed away 2 months ago and he is due to get a federal tax refund. The check is made out in his name but obviously he cannot sign it. There is no estate money/bank account, all of his bank accounts were joint and have been closed already.

As the administrator of his estate, am I legally able to sign it and cash/deposit it?

Unless you are the rightful sole heir as stated in his late will and testament to receive all money and property, then you can not sign his tax refund check or any future money that his estate receives unless cleared by the probate judge overseeing the handling of his estate.

As the administrator of his estate, you have to disburse his property in accordance to his will. Even though he is dead and the tax check came AFTER bank accounts were closed, the check still belongs to his estate.
