This is true you will start a fire. If you leave the house, make a check list and put it on the door you exit> It should say: Turn Off Stove, Turn Off Water, Take Cell Phone, Take Keys. This helped my son who had the same problem and it worked.

Also you can buy some fries that can be done in a microwave. This is not a myth, this is how fires are started.

Yes, it is very important to make sure you turn off the gas, electricity from the stove/oven when you are done. Many tragic accidents occur from those forgetfulness and lead to terrible results. Like something left boiling and sometimes the over boiling of liquid may extinguish the fire and left the gas stove continue to gas the whole house or some fat in the food may cause to catch fire etc

That admonition is somewhat out of date, stemming from when people heated their cookstoves with wood or coal. Untended fires of that nature sometimes did cause the stove to overheat and set nearby flammable objects on fire. It can happen with some modern appliances when they malfunction, but that's a rare occurrence these days.

no it is not a myth. food left on the stove will eventually burn up and cause a fire. if you are so forgetful that you can't remember to turn off a fire hazard, consider getting a roommate, or simply forget cooking for yourself until you can do so like a responsible adult.

You should be more careful. The fries could have caught on fire and started a fire. I once came home drunk and decided to cook some ramen soup, fell asleep on the couch, and it caught on fire, and my neighbors were about to beat down my door. Always make sure the stove is off, and make sure you have smoke alarms that are working.

some safety measures need to become habits.

Do you stop at a stop sign if you're in the middle of a flat plain and can see for miles in every direction ? answer : yes, you do because you need to be able to say yes you stopped, because you always do . Good habits !

Keep doing it until you actually start a fire - that seems to be the only thing you'll believe.
