If one files for bankruptcy, would it be in the local newspaper?

If so, why would that information be made public?

Yes, bankruptcy filings are announced publicly.

    Why?

So that your CREDITORS can lodge their appeals with the Bankruptcy Court and file their claims against whatever money the Court are able to extract from your remaining assets when the Court determines what will become of them!

Yes. The previous answer is correct. It's called public notice. It's required by law.
