    y = (x-1)^2(x-2)^3

    use the zero product property

    x - 1 = 0 ---- x = 1 << there are 2 of these factors, so multiplicity is 2

    x - 2 = 0 ---- x = 2 << there are 3 of these factors, so multiplicity is 3
