Recommend morally ambiguous novels?

I want to read something dark and grim with a morally ambiguous main character. But it has to be mostly grounded in realism and I don't want any supernatural stuff in it. A battle of wits would make it even better.

I think that Innocence is a good novel that fits your description. The main character is born with a deformity that makes people want to kill him. He has to live underground until he finally realizes that he isn't deformed at all, but is pure. It might be on the 'supernatural' side, but it does have a lot of good points that left me asking questions days after finishing it.

Try the Jeff Lindsay "Dexter" novels. I read a few of them before the series was made and found them interesting.

Another possibility is the "Burke" series by Andrew Vachss.
