I love open-world games that you don't have to follow the main story if you're not ready to. The story can make or break a game. The game could have awesome gameplay features and an open world and the best leveling system ever, but if the story sucks...I won't play it for long. Story is important.
At the same time, I love The Sims franchise which doesn't technically have a story at all. You can do, not ANYTHING, but close to it. The same goes for Minecraft; I've sunk hour after hour into that game, and loved every minute of it.
I still prefer a good RPG, though. So, story for me. I would love to see an amalgamation of the two.

I like both kinds of games but there are some extra factors that make me want or not want them. For a game with a story, I like it if it has characters that interest me and even more so if it's Fantasy/RPG game like Final Fantasy. (Love that game so much :3). As for freedom open world games, to me there has to be a point in doing the stuff that the game lets you do. Like in Minecraft, you do stuff to survive and its nice because its a game with so much replay value and you can add mods and go to multiplayer if things get boring.

Yes.
Either scenario can be good but the whole game has to "work".
A lame story will kill a game, just as a game with a meaningless open world structure will kill a game.
Games don't have to have a story but they have to still provide a purpose and be fun - even if that purpose is provided by the player.

Why not both? You can have a game where you can do anything, but there's still some sort of a story arc behind it all.

Personally I think story gameplay is the best because even though free world gives you no rules, it can become quite boring. Really depends on the person I think, but if your looking for just straight objectives like I do towards a game, story gameplay is definitely the best.
