My ex started talking to me... what do you think he wants?

My ex and I have not talked since we broke up about 6 months ago. Last night, he chatted me saying that he is sorry and wants to be friends with me since we see each other so much in school and he doesn't want to continue being awkward. We both apologized to each other but this came up so suddenly that I am not sure what to do and what he actually wants. He suggested that we eat something and hangout sometime, and I said yes. Does he truly just want to be friends, or possibly getting back together? I asked a couple of my guy friends and they said that he probably just wants sex bc all teenagers do (unless he still genuinely likes me), but I strongly believe that my ex is not that type of person. He is one of the top students in our school and is very nice, but awkward. I still kinda like him so maybe I'm overthinking this so please help me!!
