If you friend is staying at a hotel, is it ok to go over and potentially stay over?

I've never done this myself before, but I was just wondering is this an okay thing to do, I've had a few people that I know that have done it but is it okay?

    Ask. You need to give some money or give them a lift somewhere and treat them to breakfast.
