can I use a regular steel to tune up the edge on a ceramic knife?

A ceramic knife cannot be sharpened by any home means. Since the blade on those knives are diamond hard and brittle as glass any attempt to sharpen them will likely just ruin them.

A ceramic knife does not form a burr like a metal blade will, so a steel won't help.

If you have a sharpening rod instead of a steel, you can use it, but you're much better off with a proper sharpener.

Thanks Dan, I've been wondering about that ever since my brother gave me a ceramic knife for my birthday. I guess I'll do the proper thing.
